The gekkō were a powerful clan, worshiping the god of the moon and bending to the wills of the night sky. some legends even say that there was a fourth god, a mischievous thing that some rolled their eyes at the idea of. different legends have different recounts of who the three wolves represent. different clans within the land worshiped any of the three gods, or all of them at once, or sometimes none of them at all. The god of the moon, the goddess of the sun, and the god of war (otherwise known as the three noble children) were believed to be the three wolves of the land of iron.
